I knew this was the biggest loss, but I can't believe the loss was only $2.5 million. I would have thought Vegas lost at least 3x that, maybe more.

I thought the same. I figured Vegas lost a lot on GB/Den, but that game did go over.

Nevada ALWAYS makes money on the prop bets

The SEA/DEN game did have the ~60/1 1st score safety prop that hit. And that Vegas still crushed that game.

Not sure where all this talk of the 49ers coming out of nowhere/no one saw them coming, is getting it's legs.

When they got JimmyG mid-season a couple years ago they were 1-10, then won their last 5 games with him. It was pretty clear then that they were a good team with him at the helm. Then last year they lost him for the season in Week 3, and so went 4-12 with the likes of Beathard and Mullins.

Expecting anything close to that 4-12 season last year, with a healthy JimmyG for a full season, would be awfully misinformed and short-sighted.

Football outsiders DVOA says SF went from 27th to 7th on offense and 23rd to 2nd on defense. JimmyG has been a slightly above average QB this year. Most people didn't think they'd be one of the best teams in the NFL this year.

Were the 49ers tanking after JimmyG got injured?

No, but the injury bug hit them HARD last year. Tough to be competitive with close to 50% of your projected starters on IR.
