No. I don't even like seeing guns in public on the hips of police officers. But it wold depend on where "in public" and how the guns are being carried. A bunch of guys who look like they are on their way to shoot deer would feel a lot less threatening than a single guy peering at the crowd.

Not sure why you specify long guns, though.

I live in the south, a pistol on your hip somewhat normal.

encountering open carry in the wild is weird and shocking. I mean, I knew poeple like that existed, but didn't think it was common. but when i actually saw it, I was more than a little shocked.

Not sure why retailers like walmart or Meijer (where I saw it), allow it, tbh.

Dudes who carry rifles/etc. on their back "because they can" are baiting for a confrontation.

We lived in the UK for almost 5 years, and at first it was weird seeing unarmed police officers, but by the time we left it was weird seeing armed officers at the train station.

Now that we're back, seeing an armed officer seems normal.

Have you ever encountered someone carrying a rifle in protest or because they want to be safe while getting some butter from walmart?

Also live in the south, and while a pistol in your car/truck is pretty normal, a pistol on the hip is something I only see once every few months on non-LE (if that often).

Not that I recall. I mentioned law enforcement because it was an experience people who haven't lived in other countries probably haven't encountered, and I remember how weird it felt.

I have seen plenty of people carrying handguns (holstered, not literally carrying them), including one at an offsite work meeting (it was in his backpack, but someone mentioned guns and he shared that he had one with him and even showed it off). I have seen plenty of people carrying rifles for hunting or in their car, but I don't think I've seen people take a long gun into a store, or just wandering around. I would probably think it was weird if I did, but maybe not menacing depending on the context. In hand, in public -- menacing; holstered on your back in public, in the right context (e.g. a store that sells hunting supplies) -- probably not menacing. But my in-laws live in the country and are big hunters, so it doesn't feel weird. In the "city" I'd probably feel different.

A lot depends on what the other guy is wearing and if I'm currently packing or not.
