Default My new hand ranking system

I slightly modified the hand rankings from the Kill Everyone books. I put them into 13 groups to make them easier to remember. These rankings are used only for pre-flop all-in decisions when stacks are short. When you're deep stacked you'd rather have 87s than A7o to defend your blind with, but when you're all-in pre, the value of having an ace in your hand is more important. Each hand is ranked under the earliest possible month. Here we go:

January - AA-99 (Happy New Year!)

February - AK, AQ, AJs, ATs (Valentines Day. The hands that look beautiful but break your heart.)

March - Suited Broadway (The Music Man has a march in it, and there are uniforms (suited) and it's a broadway show.) (Some of these mnemonics are sort of a stretch.)

April - 88-55, AJ, KQ (The April Fools hands, easily dominated.)

May - 44-22, Axs, K9s-89s (Memorial Hands. Hands likely to get you killed.)

June - Unsuited Broadway - (Start of summer vacation, one of the places to go on vacation is Broadway.)

July - Axo - (July 4. Rockets!)

August - Suited connectors, one-gappers, really good two-gappers. - (Going to the beach, you wear a bathing suit and want to look good. These are the hands that look really good. 97s! J8s! 64s!

September - KTo-K5o, 97o-95o. (Labor Day. Working like a dog. Dogs are K-9, so this group is the medium unsuited K-9s.)

October - Kxs, Qxs, Jxs, Txs. (Halloween. Suited, so you're wearing a costume, but they're crappy costumes so only one card is a face card.

November - Unsuited connectors, K4o-K2o. (Thanksgiving, so you're just filling up your plate with random crap that looks good together. Also, there's a K in Thanksgiving.)

December - Qxo (Christmas. If Jesus is the King of Kings, Mary must be Queen of Something, and Christmas really should be her big day.)

The remaining 35% or so of hands are so bad they don't deserve their own month. They're almost always unplayable under any circumstances.

How to use the rankings in a tournament:

If you're under 15BB or so, your only real move is to shove pre-flop. Here's when to shove what hands, assuming no one has raised yet:

Divide 1 by the number of players with cards still, including yourself, and convert to a percentage. If there is one limper and you're on the button, there are 4 players left, so 25%.

Add 2% for every BB you have less than 10. Subtract 2% for every BB you have more than 10. That's the percent of hands you should be shoving.

January doesn't count, because pocket pairs 99 or better you don't have to think about and you should always be shoving. Starting with February, each month through September is approximately 5%. October through December are 10% each.

So if you're in the cutoff with 9BB and there is one limper, you should be shoving 22% of hands. That's 4.4 months, which means all hands May and better, plus about half of the June hands.
