Went to a wedding at a Mennonite church this weekend. Church is in downtown Lancaster, in an area where you might not feel particularly safe walking around alone after dark. Small but prominent signs on all the entrance doors declared the church to be a weapons-free zone. Made my heart glad.

How many were wearing short-sleeved shirts/blouses?

Should churches have armed security? Like in a perfect world no, and I find it sad that its come to this, but yes, if a church wants to hire armed security or allow its parishioners to carry so they feel protected, then they should have that option.

"allow"?
"feel"?

I think you and I may think differently on this issue.

Do you think a church should have the authority to say whether guns (or anything else) are allowed in the premises? I doubt you really disagree on that part.

I agree with bigb that it's mostly about feeling safe, and not actually about actual safety. I bet a church is safer without a bunch of guns, especially if they are carried by random congregants.

...yeah, I suppose they can hang a sign that asks people with guns to leave them in the car.

You and I apparently disagree about the safety part. I've heard of situations where a packing parishioner would have been advantageous. I've never heard of a situation where a gun went off in church by accident.

So, you speculate, that a "hero with a gun" in the congregation would have been able to stop a shooting, despite no evidence of that occouring?

And are completely uninformed regarding national news, that was heavily reported even by Fox News:

None of this dismissal of facts and logic is surprising to me.

Feels over reals for sure.

Re-read post 59 of this thread.

I've never heard of a situation where an armed parishioner would have done anyone any good. Ymmv. But it's hard to shoot "the bad guy" if he's standing in the midst of your friends and neighbors.
