I'm a recent FCAS and am thinking of working in Bermuda for a couple of years.
I have read most of the bigger threads in this forum and have a few questions. 1) I did a search on the CAS membership directory for actuaries working in Bermuda and went on their company's website. Most, if not all, of the websites ask you to send in your resume to the HR. They do not show any postings on their website. So my questions is: is it better to go through a recruiter to find a job in Bermuda or to send CVs to the HR departments of the companies? 2) Given that almost all actuaries in Bermuda are FCAS and that I'm a recent FCAS with relatively less experience (4 years), will I be expected to do all the grunt work? Or will I be doing a similar level of work that I'm doing right now (analyses and some management work)? Thanks in advance. ![]() |

First off, congrats on attaining FCAS! WRT your specific questions:
1) The first place to look for open positions is in the Royal Gazette (main local newspaper http://www.royalgazette.com). ALL open positions must be posted in the RG for at least 3 days to satisfy immigration requirements. If the advertised position includes the line "Only Bermudians or Spouses of Bermudians need apply" or something similar, don't bother applying b/c there is already an expat holding that position and the company would prefer to retain that person if there isn't an equivalently qualified Bermudian or SOB. Most, if not all, positions are routed thru HR and that's the reason for what you've seen on the websites. Companies here are small enough though that the actuaries and HR know each other so it's not necessarily the "black hole" you might experience elsewhere from sending your resume to HR. You should also consider using a recruiter b/c many times they have retained searches where companies are not actively seeking a candidate but if the right one came along they would consider interviewing them. 2) You are incorrect in assuming that almost all actuaries in Bermuda are Fellows. There are quite a few students in various actuarial/analytical type roles. The type of work you ultimately do will be based on the position you occupy. That being said, due to the relatively low # of actuaries in any given company in Bermuda, you will likely have the chance to see many different areas of the company (modeling, pricing, reserving, capital modeling, etc). |

Thanks for the response. It is appreciated!
I was looking at the royalgazette's job section and it seems like they update it quite often. |

Yep, it has to be updated every day (corresponds with the ads printed in the daily paper).
Btw, I assume you keyed in on the XL Corporate Actuary position in today's paper. |

The Gazette may list jobs but often it is a formality and they already have a candidate chosen. It's an immigration requirement to list the job
I would look to a recruiter or simply network. Most actuaries are credentialed but not all. I would guess 75% or so. |

what's the salary range for a new FCAS with 4-5 years of working experience? Also, what's the normal requirement to Get a AVP position? How about VP? Thanks.
