![]() The car wash guy in the OP's post is almost certainly above average in aspects other than grades, likely personality and social connections. He had to make the owner trust him as manager of the first car wash. He needed to be an effective manager and face for the business. He needed to convince a bank to loan him the money to buy his first car wash, and then to expand his business.
But as people like to say when talking about privilege, you don't notice your own privilege. I think it's fine recognizing that not everyone will succeed in schooling. But there's a difference between the C student who's not that smart and the C student who's lazy. The car wash guy may be the former, and there was probably another worker who was the latter, who the original car wash owner was never going to consider for manager.
