I entered another tournament and am regretting it already. Not accusing anyone of cheating, but in my group is another NM and a new account that has never lost a game and is crushing me fast. Tournaments are really fun though if they are set up fairly evenly.

I also decided to get an NM to coach me once a week during lockdown time. Pretty cheap and hoping that structure helps, since I'm terrible at self-study from books.

It would be interesting to get some personalized lessons. I never have but I think I could still improve my game. I have some books that deserve to be read but without structure I won't do anything.

Mayan how did you find a teacher?

I got it through the ICC - it was the only site that had reviews for teachers. I was surprised at how terrible the chess.com and lichess "find coaches" section was. Impossible to really filter down.

My worst area is the endgame, by far, so I went with the NM on there that specializes in that. $25/hour for him. I'm on the 30 day trial of ICC (he does his lessons through there) so that gives me four weeks of lessons as a trial, and if I like it the added cost of signing up for ICC isn't that bad. Most US based IM or above coaches are at least $60/hour that I could find. (I also reached out to some streamers and they were all $100 / hour)

I know some of the local NMs at my chess club give lessons as well, but they are all in their early 20s so I'm not sure how good they are as teachers compared to chess ability which is one of the reasons I chose a more established coach. Remind me in a few weeks and I can let you know if I think it was worth it or not.

How is your ICC experience thus far? I haven't played on ICC in about 10 years. I'm wondering if paying for a chess.com premium membership is worth it, but also would consider ICC. I would mostly be interested in videos if I'm paying.
