I generally agree with DTNF in that the "background" won't be either a definitive "GO" or "NO GO" when looking at the resume in isolation.

However, when looking at two otherwise equally strong candidates, that background may provide some information in understanding what each brings to the table.

Someone with any sort of work experience will generally look better than someone with no work experience listed (again, ceteris paribus).

And someone with "direct, relevant" experience isn't necessarily the clear choice in that some hiring managers are looking for that "additional perspective" in bringing on someone new.

So bottom line: that line of thinking won't produce anything meaningful when trying to sell yourself. Spend more time selling what you have and convince an employer that you can do what they need you to do.
