To me, the "joke" isn't offensive, just maybe in bad taste. Definitely not something I'd say on the first job, but also not going to ruin your career.

I'm curious to how your interviews went that lead you to the job and then the joke on the first day. (sorry, not trying to sound mean, just an EL hopeful who has had interviews that I thought went well, but didn't get a follow up).

The issue with offensiveness is about the possibility that some ONE person is offended (not you or me specifically). So, "bad taste" seems to consider that possibility.
And, that one person might be in charge of your job.
