Question for RPG guys here, which do you like more (or dislike less)?

Lots and lots of stats
or
A gigantic confusing skill tree?

I'm trying to decide how to handle unlocks for my game. Either doing tasks give you stat points which leads to unlocks, or you get skill points that are automatically invested in the giant tree.

That's too opaque of a question. Which examples are you asking about?
1) You do a quest/level up, and that increase me strength to 10, which automatically increases how much stuff you can carry?
2) You level up, and get a skill point that you can use in a tree to get a new skill? Like increase carry capacity vs. increase damage?
3) You level up, and you get a point to increase a stat of your choice. At 10 strength, you automatically increase how much stuff you can carry.
4) You level up and at level 10, you automatically increase carry capacity (regardless of stats)?

I like #2 best I think, unless my choices are "increase damage 0.5%" vs. "increase HP by 0.2%." I hate that, because it seems so small. Love "shoot fireballs" vs. "shoot lightning." Though, it depends on the game.

I briefly made it into the top 10 one time.

Like in a single match, not the leader boards.

I prefer choice over automatic selection, generally.

Regional, they have different servers and therefore different leaderboards for NA, EU, ASIA, OCE, etc.

Nice, hah. Top 10 and Top 5 in matches can get super intense. Wild how much a game like this can get your adrenaline ramped up in later stages.

If I go that direction it won't be too far from that.
This is a rough mock-up of the major active skills.

Uh. It's weirder than that.

In the skill tree version, you work as blacksmith, and gain skill points towards artificer and mechanic. You don't really select anything, the tree just gradually fills. The player sees no numbers.

In the stats version, there's like a dozen stats. You work as a blacksmith to gain stat points in strength and crafting. Artificer and Mechanic both require those stats as well as something else. So the player is thinking a lot about numbers. But no giant web.

Reminds me I need to finish Stellaris.

That's fair. This isn't really a standard RPG though, it's important that you are what you do.

You can look at something like Destiny 2 class skills where there is some choice, but it's very limited.

I think Battleborn had an A/B option as you leveled up.

OH yeah, A/B option could work well. I'll think on it.

Awwww, I like the POE skill tree. But maybe that's just because I've played it for ages and now how to filter out the garbage nodes.

I like having some customization involved. Even something relatively simple [nowadays] like the Diablo 2 skill tree was enough to keep me entertained for years.
