If an athlete is interested in playing basketball, he or she will practice and hopefully master jump shots and lay-ups. However, while the winning team is the team which scores the most points, successfully shooting a basket is not the only skill required to actually win that game. Players must also learn teamwork, dribbling, passing, free throws, defense, rebounding, and plays.

Similarly, if an actuary or industry professional is interested in successfully developing predictive analytics skills, learning to build a predictive model is not the only skill required to actually win the advanced analytics game. In fact, predictive analytics skills go far beyond model building itself. Modelers and organizations must also consider the importance of gaining cross-functional buy-in, how to select the most appropriate projects, measuring the impact of the models, the cultural and political implications of change, and more.

In this ACTEX webinar, we will begin by level-setting the basics of predictive analytics (why it is necessary and the basic life cycle) but we will quickly move into other factors that must be taken into account. We’ll talk about common challenges that can easily collapse a project (and how to fix them), why implementation of models is so difficult and what you should think about to ensure a smooth roll-out, and review the necessary considerations for laying the foundation of a new project.

If you are looking to develop your skills as a modeler, move into a leadership role within the predictive analytics space, build a more robust data analytics capability within your organization, or even if you just have an interest in learning more about predictive analytics, then this webinar is for you. Please note, this webinar will not cover in-depth statistical, technological, or mathematical aspects of how to build a predictive model.

Learning Objectives:
  • Become familiar with the full cycle of a predictive analytics capability, from planning through reporting (i.e., beyond just the model build itself)
  • Recognize necessary considerations beyond data and technology, such as legal implications, change management, and required skillsets
  • Understand how and why particular predictive modeling projects may be more impactful than others when building or enhancing the predictive analytics function
  • Identify common pitfalls within a predictive analytics culture, and possible cures

Who Should Attend This Webinar?
  • Actuaries and data scientists who are looking to further develop skills within predictive analytics
  • Actuaries and other industry professionals who would like to develop leadership skills for the predictive analytics function within their organizations
  • Actuaries and other industry professionals who are interested in developing a [more robust] predictive analytics capability for their organizations
  • Anyone interested in the many aspects of predictive analytics within an organization

Presenter: Christine Hofbeck, FSA, MAAA

Christine Hofbeck is an independent consulting actuary who specializes in helping organizations build or improve their predictive analytics capabilities and data driven decisioning. Her ability to drive innovation within organizations through creative use of data, multi-disciplinary collaboration, motivating leadership and talent management has been featured in publications including The Actuary, Sync Magazine, and on National Geographic’s documentary television series “Breakthrough”.

Christine spent more than a dozen years as a consulting actuary at Kwasha Lipton, an industry leader in employee benefits and retirement consulting. She moved into P&C insurance to build a comprehensive predictive analytics practice from the ground up for AIG’s consumer lines, and to develop a seamless interface between AIG’s insurance professionals and their new Science (predictive modeling) team in commercial lines. She later built out the predictive analytics capability for Prudential’s Group Insurance.

Christine left Prudential to fulfill a 16-year dream of competing on CBS’s hit reality television show Survivor. She is currently an independent consultant and travels both domestically and internationally as a keynote speaker, including being the featured speaker at the largest university TEDxTalk event in the US. She currently serves on the Society of Actuaries Executive Board of Directors.

Christine holds degrees from both the University of Pennsylvania and MIT. She has published numerous articles about predictive analytics and professionalism topics, served on multiple SOA research project oversight committees, helped develop the SOA predictive analytics certificate program (and grade exams), and served as contributing editor for The Actuary.
