Sorry, that was just me being unclear. What I meant was that if the accident didn't occur, I was planning to keep my old car at least five more years. Since I only buy cars every 15-20 years, I buy new when I do buy one.

That was the worst part -- the accident happened literally the day before my son turned 16. It was all set to become his, or really, our shared car.

EDIT -- he doesn't have his license yet, so it would have been shared while he's learning, then become his once he's ready. Either way, planning to keep it in the family for a while. I feel more comfortable with a 16 year old car that I know everything about than a random 16 year old car.
