find me a quality RPG on the DS that isn't a remake or a pokemon game.

hell - GBA for that matter. Golden Sun 1 & 2 were QUALITY on GBA, but I don't think there was much else...

I'll try the Wii one from home. given that the Wii is SUPPOSED to be more available, I'll see what it's like in the store, and figure out if it's something worth while or not for me to pick up

TOKYO -- Sony's PlayStation 3 isn't living up to the hype _ at least on Japan's Internet auctions. The gaming consoles, which went on sale here Saturday, are fetching reasonable prices online, disappointing those who had hoped to make a quick profit by reselling the machines on the Internet.

Some of the 4,000 PlayStation 3 consoles listed on Yahoo Japan's auction site were downright bargains. Even systems with games included were going for about 60,000 yen ($510) for the most expensive model and 50,000 yen ($420) for the cheaper one. That's in line with Sony's suggested retail prices, minus the extra games.

not sure the extent of it, but that could tick some people off

Yeah...if a system's quality RPGs are all remakes and ports, then it does not succeed in that genre IMO.

There are some 200 PS2 games that are currently not working on PS3. But that's like 5% of the market (these specific numbers coming from the Buzz Out Loud podcast...)

while 200 might be 5%, what 5% is it? the top selling 5%, or crappy games 5%...

I know that MS was upfront that not all games would be backwards compatible, and they listed those (most were not the extremely popular games). I know this wasn't planned and is a problem, but depending on what games, that could seriously tick people off

As a DS owner who bought the system solely to enjoy the great remade and ported RPGs that I remember from my childhood, and as someone who saw quite a number of pre-ordered FF IIIs on the shelf today, I think there is certainly an audience for RPGs on handhelds, whether you think they "succeed" or not.

Among the games...

# Tekken 5: A number of modes don't play background music properly.

# Xenosaga Episode II: The opening movie sometimes stops and sometimes doesn't properly play background music.

# Code Age Commanders: Problems (including data loss) with save game data.

# Radiata Stories: Background music during movie scenes may not play back properly.

# Star Ocean Till the End of Time (includes Directors Cut): Movie scenes may not have proper sound playback.

# Driving Emotion Type-S: BGM may not properly play back during races

# Gran Turismo 4: The screen may freeze following the title demo.

So its not quite on the level of 360 BC (which also had its own problems for games MS listed), but its still kinda funny, especially given that Sony basically built the PS3 with a PS2 inside in order to make it work. On the bright side, if this was MS, we would be complaining about how Psychonauts is still not on the BC list, yet something like Hello Kitty Island Adventure is.
