Yep, Excel is dumb.

And I don't get why the OP doesn't want a table lookup.

Table lookup is fine if I will use it many times and/or for a longer list. I just don't want to be bothered to find a place to put it (even in hidden cells).

This is exactly what I need. Thanks! Didn't realize you could embed arrays in a formula with {}.

You get those {} by using a different keystroke to enter it as an array.

I don't like array formulas. Would much rather find a place to put a little table for lookup. YMMV, I guess.

are you talking about CTRL SHIFT Enter (CSE) Formulas? Then the {} will surround the entire formula. what moralhazard posted isn't a CSE formula, I don't think.

Edit...just tested, no it's not. it's not an array CSE formula. Simple excel formula with manually typing the {}

Not a fan of curly braces. Too easy to screw up when someone decides to play with your work.
Stick to the embedded ifs if you have to.
Use ALT-ENTER to create line-breaks between each if.

you are correct, it is not an array formula. just a formula with an array in it.

that's what sheet protection is for!

Good idea on the alt-enter though.
