I work as an analyst within my company's "Advanced Analytics" team in Claims. There's 3 of me and 6 Data Scientists. Their work focuses on engineering projects and mine on modeling. Of them, all have advanced degrees and 4 have PhDs in either Math, Stats, or Comp Sci. I don't have an advanced degree, just CAS letters and have been self teaching for about 5 years. (My boss could care less about my letters.) We work alongside each other and use the same tools. Frankly, I wouldn't want to do their job and prefer my work instead but I also would not be able to do their job. If you want to do predictive modeling then OP you're on the right path. My advice is to be patient while you self teach. Put yourself in anything remotely related to that project work (and that supports personal development) and grind. Good luck.

Hi guys,

Just wanted to report back that I found a data scientist job! In the end, convincing people to give me an interview was the hardest part. Below are some stats if you're interested:

Cold application to 100+ companies- heard back from 2 companies
Asked 6 friends to refer me internally- heard back from 4 companies
I got another interview through a dating site
I got another interview by randomly running into a data scientist on a hike
I got rejected by 2 companies
And I got offers from 3 companies

It's been a very humbling journey. Thanks everyone for all the help and support!

Congrats! I'm glad it worked out.

As for the interview through the dating site... never heard of that one before. How did the date go?

I'm assuming questions like

"With so many potential mates available, why should I continue to date you?"

"What's your greatest weakness?"

"What do you bring to this relationship?"

"Would you like a job where I work?"

were asked.

Is that a date question or an interview question?
