ACTEX Learning Presents:

Making Your Health Data Confess
Analytics, Exploration, and Predictive Modeling

November 15, 2018 from 1:00 to 2:30 PM Eastern Time

1.8 SOA CPD, CAS CE Credits/Training Hours
This is a potential source of 1.5 hours of CPD for the Canadian Institute of Actuaries

In recent years, data analytics and predictive modeling skills have become important in the healthcare industry. Knowing how to effectively find actionable insights from health data is enormously empowering.

Unfortunately, for most junior actuaries and data analysts, these skills are picked up informally on the job, through many hard lessons, over years of trial and error. Using a formal learning structure provides a stronger knowledge foundation that will expedite the learning process and provide more confidence in applying these skills in a professional setting.

This webinar introduces health analytics best practices through a case study, using analytics to manage opioid abuse among a patient pool. The attendees will learn how to work with health data to derive actionable insights.

Learning Objectives:

Health Data 101
  • Sources of health data
  • Types of health data
  • Common features, issues of health data
Initial Data Exploration
  • Describe the purpose of initial data exploration
  • View examples of initial exploratory analyses
  • Data management considerations
Building Predictive Models: Identify Patient at Risk of Opioid Abuse Case Study
  • Useful tips for feature engineering and building predictors that enable identification of actionable insights
  • Step through building a decision tree and a logistic regression model*
Assess Model Performance
  • Run model performance, graphically (e.g. ROC curves) and quantitatively (e.g. confusion matrix)
  • Validate model
  • Perform sensitivity/scenario analyses
*Using open-source machine learning software platform KNIME, (this powerful tool uses a graphical interface thus requires little to no coding)

Attendees will receive:
  • Resource guide with tips for health data analytics
  • Recap of topics discussed during the webinar
Who Should Attend This Webinar?
  • Actuarial and data analysts who work with health data the beginning stages of their careers.
  • Analysts with experience wishing to learn about best practices in health analytics.
  • Anyone interested in practical applications of machine learning techniques.
Presenter: Yiding Jiang, FFA, MSc

Yiding has over 15 years of experience in health analytics. He is passionate about demonstrating predictive modeling techniques to find actionable insights from healthcare data.

He is currently the analytics lead in a healthcare software company that uses AI software to identify suboptimal care delivery, thus preempting adverse events before they occur.

Previously, he was the analytics manager at a major hospital system in New York City, where he implemented an analytics framework that informed clinical and operational strategies. Yiding has also worked for multiple health insurers, including Medicare, Medicaid and other lines of business. He is intimately knowledgeable in the use of analytics within insurers, in areas such as provider benchmarking, risk adjustment, and care management.

He is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and holds a MSc in Health Policy, Planning and Financing from the London school of Economics.
