Default Current UW Student

Hello everyone!

I'm a current UW Student working on my B.S. in Economics (2nd Quarter Junior).

I would love to get in touch with some other current students or alums who have pursued a career in actuarial sciences. I'm trying to get in touch with the campus's Actuary Club, but it seems like the club might not exist any more.

I would love class suggestions! I transferred to UW from Shoreline Community College for Winter 2013. I've taken math classes up through Calculus 3, Stat 311, And Intermediate Micro & Macro. I've also gone through the 200-level Accounting series. Are there any other classes at the UW that y'all found helpful?

Thanks!

SeattleEmily

I'm not sure if you have all your VEEs, but you might check against the list here:

http://www.soa.org/education/exam-req/edu-vee.aspx

Also, you might want to ask in the career or software forums if it would be a good idea to take some programming or software courses.

Have you taken probability? Could help with exam 1/P. Also, I'm not sure, but I'd guess some classes would resemble some of the material would resemble that in exam 4/C, loss models, which has quite a lot of statistical modelling. Would have to ask around though, I'm not sure.

Very sad to see that the club has no current representation. I think this most recent incarnation is the longest running one we ever had.

That being said, to prep for P and get a foundation for Probability that will help on 3 & 4, Math/Stat 394-395 are/were the best UW has to offer. Stat 311 really isn't going to help much, except at the most basic level of understanding probability.

Other courses that were helpful when I was there include Math/Stat 396 and 491(maybe 492). But these greatly depend on the Professor. I think I had June Morita(?) and Christoph Burdzy (?). Of course, that was ten years ago, not sure if they are still around or teaching the course the same way.

You could resuscitate the club, would show some leadership skills to employers.

That is a great idea! I have sent a couple of emails to previous faculty advisers, and I am going to re-start the club in the Fall if all goes well!

I'll be a new transfer this coming Fall, so I'd love to join the revived Actuary Club. Also, I was wondering what sorts of UW classes correspond to the exams, particularly FM and MLC. The info on the old club's website was useless.

I will shoot you a message with my UW email in case you have any interest in helping coordinate the set-up of a new club! I know we'd need at least 5 students to gain status as a registered student organization.

I haven't gotten to FM or MLC yet, so I am not sure about which classes will coordinate well with those at this point.

I do not think the UW has anything on interest theory or life contingencies. Most of us UW grads all learned that stuff from self study.

June Morita was my favorite teacher!
But she taught stat inference when I was there, which covers stuff you won't run into until Exam 4 (or 3L I think, or I guess whatever new exam they're pushing out on the CAS side)
