And I had a similar response to the others.

I've enjoyed my time working with "specialty" lines than I did with personal lines.

Is this like one of those "accidentally the whole thing" type situation?

I was more wating the distinction between specialty and primary. They are not mutually exclusive. I can see how you might enjoy personal lines more if you like to play with glms and actually have credible data.

"Specialty" will often get to more of the account pricing for a risk rather than pricing a (large) book of similar risk (this latter I'm interpreting as being "primary").

I think the data, or lack thereof, played a part in it. There were products that seemed like underwriters (and rightfully so) were running the entire show and the functions we performed were basically useless and ignored.

I love how the actuaries mostly get the final say about things where I work now. Maybe I have an ego and power problem?

Interesting. The reason I asked was because I thought that specialty lines sounded super interesting when I first started off. A lot of people who never worked in specialty thought I was crazy to move into an industry as bland/common as life. At least for me, I liked the idea of working with specialty products much more than in reality.

We have all these discussions all the time but the field and disciplines are so expansive that generalizing using anecdotal experience is hogwash.
