If society implies social, isn't the Society of Actuaries an oxymoron?

i.e. force the community service upon the disenfranchised (never enfranchised?) pre-FSAs?

At the BOG meeting on 10/27, the Board voted NOT to require mandatory community service, but to encourage all new FSA's to commit to voluntary service after achieving fellowship. It was broadly recognized that no matter how good an idea community service is, mandating it was not a good idea.

An excellent compromise.

And all new fellows (be they FSA or FCAS) should volunteer for an exam committee for at least a year or two. Unless they never voiced a single complaint about the exam process, then maybe they can skip it. Put up or shut up.

Edit to add: I realize exam committees are professional service, not community service. But I added it in the "charity begins at home" spirit of things.
