Default Employee is a painfully slow typer

I have a direct report who types incredibly slow.

I suspect it vastly slows down his work. We do a good amount of documentation, and given how much he struggles to type a line when instant messaging, I can't imagine how long it takes him to type up our documentation. Well ... I kind of can, because it takes him a long time, but it's hard to know how much of that is due to typing speed vs. other factors like experience.

I'm not sure how to bring this up. Should I be telling him to work on his typing skills on work time? On his personal time? Or is this just a millennial thing and I have to accept he can probably text way faster than me, but his keyboard skills will always be pokey?

Do they still have typing classes in school?

Interesting, because my siblings and I had formal typing courses in school as kids (tail end of milennial into Z). They even had typing games that showed your WPM at the end and became a competition among my classmates. Not sure what the best approach is to bring it up.

Maybe give him an iPhone plugged into the computer as a keyboard, and he'll end up typing faster than you xddd
