I'm guessing cheerleading is similar to other sports in that it is primary driven from the parents and the community at a younger age.

In high school football was the sport to play. We had a good team so if you had any kind of athletic ability you played football. There were definitely people who were there just so they could fit in. I quit after a couple years once it stopped being fun.
