Turn Right at Machu Picchu, in which the author attempts to trace the steps of the explorer who discovered Machu Picchu in the early 1900s. It's a true, humorous story (seems sort of in the vein of Bill Bryson). I'm hiking to Machu Picchu in a few months, so I thought this would whet my appetite.

I reserved the latest Cormoran Strike novel (Robert Galbraith, aka JK Rowling) at3 libraries a month or two ago, just after it was released, via Overdrive.

As of today, for Brooklyn Public Library I am in position 60 for 14 copies, and for NYPL, I am position 385 on 5 copies. It's 22.5 hours long. So assuming people keep it for the full 3 weeks allowed, the earliest i'd get it from brooklyn is february or march. For NYPL, forget about it. 2023 maybe?

Anyway all this to say i just got it now from the 3rd library. No idea how, but I did. I only have 2 weeks to power through this (NAssau library's loan time is only 2 weeks). Even at double speed this is going to be close.

Hope it's worth it. the other 3 were pretty good.

I guess...I usually save my audible credits for books i can't get at the library. If I don't finish, i'll get it.

I'm working my way slowly through Emma Healey's Elizabeth is Missing which is my "Blind Date with a Book" this month. It's a clever idea, and it is well executed. The protagonist, Maud, whose best friend is missing, has Alzheimer's. She is slipping fast, mentally, and keeps bouncing back and forth between her possibly imaginary fears for Elizabeth and the period just after WWII when she was an adolescent and her older sister went missing.

I can appreciate it, but it depresses me. My dad had senile dementia, so reading it reminds me of his struggles. And no matter how the book turns out, it can't end well for poor Maude. Quite, quite gloomy.

I just tried my local library. I'm #10.

While I was reading it, this was my second favorite of the books. But upon reflection it's by far my favorite. That moment in the old professor's office while he's talking with Mark is a really well-written scene.
