Further evidence that Melo is just not good anymore. I mean wasn’t that his chance to shine with others out?

First, that's not meant to be his role with all of the NBA / Olympic mileage in his 15th NBA season. He can still put up points in bunches, but not on a consistent basis as he did throughout his career until last season.

Also, there was a 5-game stretch with those guys out where he averaged 20 a game, shooting 50%, including 16-36 from 3. a couple bad games later and they decided to permanently bench him - I don't get it. They're 5-3 since then, incl. a terrible loss to Cleveland, who had the worst record in the NBA entering the game. They're a far cry from what they were last year, and very little of that can be attributed to a guy who is accounting for less than 2% of their payroll.

Houston’s issues stem from losing arguably 2 of their 3 best defensive players from last season. But clearly something wasn’t working with the Melo experiment for them to pull the plug after just 10 games with such a relatively small amount of money invested in him.

After another loss to a crappy Eastern Conf team, the Rockets are now 9-10, good for 12th in the West.

My guess is that there was a conversation behind closed doors that we will never know about. Something along the lines of Daryl Morey showing Melo the on/off advanced stats and telling him that based on those numbers, he needed to give some other guys a crack at his spot in the rotation. Melo likely has too much pride to accept suiting up and potentially seeing ‘DNP-CD’ next to his name. A year and a half ago, he was still the best player on his team. If that type of scenario was presented to him, I could totally picture him being like ‘You want to sit me after 10 games? In that case, I’m out.’

If brutal sequences like that suggested the Thunder might be better off without Anthony, this on/off data from the Jazz series proved it:

• In 194 minutes with Anthony on the court, the Jazz outscored the Thunder by 58 points and the Thunder had a net rating of minus-12.6.

• In the 94 minutes with Anthony on the bench, the Thunder outscored the Jazz by 32 points and had a net rating of plus-18.1.

Those splits paint a drastic picture. But here's a more drastic fact: After dumping Melo in an offseason transaction, the 2018-19 Thunder suddenly have the most efficient defense in the NBA.
Efficiency thy name is not Melo

To sum it up:
  • Melo was never a plus defender and often a minus one
  • Melo never really made his teammates better
  • Melo was never a truly efficient scorer
  • Melo was a great high volume scorer
  • In his prime Melo could carry a team to the playoffs
  • Melo never adjusted his game to declining athleticism
  • Melo will probably be a HOF member due to box score stats and nothing else
