Thumbs up Director of Pricing at San Francisco InsurTech: $175k - $275k

Blue Owl is a stealth mode Silicon Valley disruptor that is rethinking, reimagining, and re-engineering insurance from the ground up. Our goal is to challenge the industry with an innovative product and best-in-class experience. We are starting with auto insurance, using data science to prevent collisions before they happen. Our customers are excited about what we’re doing, and so are our investors. We are well-funded and nearly ready for our public launch.

We are seeking our Director of Pricing, a credentialed actuary and proven leader with experience coordinating a wide scope of pricing efforts. As the Director of Pricing, you will lead our team in developing an array of sophisticated P&C pricing plans, starting with telematics-based auto. You will own our pricing strategy and implementation from beginning to end, leveraging the speed of a startup, relevant industry data, and some of the world’s best machine learning experts. You will report directly to our Senior Vice President of Insurance.

Our goal is not only to price risk as accurately as possible, but to actively improve our customers’ risk profiles. To date, we have assembled a team of talented engineers, data scientists, and insurance experts to prepare our product for launch. As our Director of Pricing, you will bridge the areas of insurance and data science, working with our machine learning experts to apply innovative pricing techniques. You will be actively involved in model development, so this is a role for someone who wants to get their hands dirty.

Because we are in stealth mode leading up to our public launch, you won't be able to find much on us online, but you'll get all the details if selected for an interview.


Primary Responsibilities
  • Own Blue Owl pricing across across P&C lines to ensure successful development and implementation.
  • Set short-term and long-term pricing strategy, goals, and key metrics.
  • Direct work of actuarial analysts and data scientists to build models.
  • Monitor loss experience and rate adequacy. Implement changes to meet underwriting targets.
  • Coordinate rollouts of pricing model and base rate updates with new product releases and software development timelines.
  • Develop filing materials and work with state regulators to ensure compliance and acceptance.
  • Collaborate with outside counsel and actuaries to ensure compliance.
  • Determine loss reserve strategy.
  • Work with underwriting experts to implement and manage reinsurance program.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.


Experience, Skills, and Traits
  • Must be a credentialed actuary. ACAS or ASA required, FCAS or FSA preferred.
  • Extensive experience leading P&C pricing efforts, including new product creation, from beginning to end.
  • Excellent project management skills to coordinate resources and dependencies to hit deadlines.
  • Experience building predictive models using large datasets.
  • Currently proficient in at least one statistical programming language (Python, R, SAS, etc.) to enable you to work with our data scientists.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices on topics such as reserving and determining new product rates.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment. Startup experience is a plus.
  • Strong decision making in high-pressure situations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field required. Master’s or insurance designations are a plus, but current quantitative skills are most important.
