I guess my wife and I are exceptions to this rule, if it exists. She's always in the way.

My husband and i, too. He'll sometimes drag me out of someone's way in public. I can be oblivious.

I don't park my shopping cart in the middle of the aisle, though. That's not a failure to notice, that's something that's always a problem waiting to happen.

I failed at being socialized as a girl, though. It wouldn't have occurred to me that anyone would mind being asked to let me cut in for 10 seconds in the midst of their 8 minute clean-up, and if I were monopolizing the sink I would thin nothing of your asking to use it. If you were standing there with the coffee pot I would probably think to offer, but if you just took the last cup of coffee and I was focusing on scrubbing out some stubborn coffee grounds, I probably wouldn't notice without your saying or doing something.
I suspect it might not be completely a gender thing, Sir, but could be regional (stereotypical rude east coasters vs stereotypical polite Midwesterners/Canadians, etc.) or urban vs suburban vs rural.

That's true. Although my husband grew up in NYC.

New Yorkers find it uncomfortable in the Midwest, it's not one-sided. "Why is she asking me about my day? That's none of her business. I wish those people would just leave me alone.
