Default Question about problem from 09/18/2006

I dont understand why we are to use the density and not the probabilities in that situation. What in the problem would indicate the use of either?

Thanks in advance.

The severity is continuous. The probability of a loss of 1 or of a loss of 2 are each 0. The densities are nonzero.

(and if you're asking about old problems like that, it would be much better to include a link in your post, rather than expecting the reader to go back and find the link to the problem.)

Dear Prof. Broverman,

Could you please provide us with a formula incorporating the deductible D for the Pareto MLE alpha formula?

Thanks,
sincerely,
dreamer
