Just note how long you've had the current one, guess how long you'll have the new one (hint: they're not making them last longer or become obsolete slower), and note that in your calculations.

My Samsung seems to work great. Lasts five days or so without a charge. Pretty cheap at Costco. My son has the same one, but he watches videos all day, so it conks out in a day or two.

Replacing the battery in a Nexus 4 is pretty easy if you have the torx screwdriver.

An OEM replacement on Amazon is about $10.

However, you should probably upgrade. You will get a much better camera for $400 with a used Nexus 6P.

Samsung has some budget smartphones such as Galaxy Grand Prime that cost around $150 but those only have 8MP back cameras (5MP selfie cam) and 540p screen. Samsung has a bunch of smartphones that aren't advertised. The company mainly advertise the S and Note series of Galaxy phones.

This seems interesting: https://martandmart.com/product/samsung-galaxy-c7/
Samsung Galaxy C7
1080p screen
16MP rear camera; 8MP selfie
2GHz Octo-Core processor
4GB RAM
32GB internal storage
Android 6.0.1
Around $389

You can compare S7: https://martandmart.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s7/
S8: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s8-8161.php

I think some phones have optical zoom so maybe you can search for those.

Just ordered the Pixel. Yeah, it's stupidly expensive, but it's basically a new camera and new phone purchase rolled into one for me so I've decided it's worth it. And, since I was pissing money away I got the 128g version, the headset thing, an extra charger, and a case. Should arrive in about a week.

I hate to throw this out there right now, but i have two damaged Pixels arriving today that will be fixed up on Monday. They are in really good condition, 32gb, black, and will be repaired with original parts. They'll probably go for somewhere around $500.
