re interviewing:

Are you missing screener calls from recruiters? Keep it very vanilla with HR, don't emphasize your nontraditional background too much imo, they're not knowledgeable enough about the profession to understand your background's value to the job.

Are you missing technical questions? Review past exam material, make sure you can do basic actuarial math. Work on basic Excel skills and whatever else you're going for (if you're listing programming, at least review one of the million coder interview books).

Are you missing basic/behavioral questions? Google the typical interview questions, google behavioral questions, and write responses. Everybody pulls from the same pool of questions. Don't have to memorize your responses, but writing them out will help you give thought out answers.

Are you socially awkward? Hang out with your friends more.

Also date more if you can. The first date conversation is pretty close to an interview. IMO it's a better trainer than mock interviews because the interviewer has a more realistic goal (evaluating to see if you're a good fit, pun intended). The mock interviewer is just reading off a list. Also, you get to listen and ask questions during the date, which is what you should be doing at a job interview.

No, I told him we didn't have any openings and then he asked me if I wanted to go party. Then I partied and from there I met a whole bunch of people. It turns out his parents are really rich and he was just going through the motions so that they would give him enough money to fund his gap year. But he did have 4 exams. I did write him 10 or so letters of recommendation and he's attending UBC for statistics next semester.

Networking lesson: have rich parents and invite your prospects clubbing. Yellow pig take note.
