w/ retain
data my_data;
set source_data;
total_paid = total_paid + paid_amt;
retain total_paid 0;
run;

Adds paid amounts across lines. Running total from top to bottom will result. Usually do this by claim. Can't really say why.

w/o retain
data my_data;
set source_data;
total_paid + paid_amt;
run;

What he suggested in the webinar. Same result. Much slower, at least in our system.

I'm not exactly new with the DATA step, nor am I any kind of expert, but I found the process very helpful in better understanding what SAS does during the DATA step and this will help me to better develop SAS code (which we primarily use for data aggregation and data screening) that will better automate the screening process.

I agree with the statement you made in general, but I would say that I would be an example of the intended audience of the presentation. The pacing could've been a bit quicker, but I don't think it wasn't that bad.

Yeah. They almost lost me to my lunch time hunger. I stuck through it though, so now I'm dazzled by a product that's included as a part of a package that I don't expect my company to buy.

Oh I thought the plug-in was free/included? We have had it for a long time but I didn't know what it was or how to use. Just tried it. Its very intuitive and easy to do. Recommended.
