Meat is by a decent margin the most expensive way to get calories, and junk food isn't really cheaper calorie for calorie if you're willing to cook, it's only if you're unwilling, OP's friend sounds like he's got lots of time to cook imo.

Bad back and a bad knee means he can't stand and chop/saute for long periods

this. not sure as cost varies by location. head of lettuce is $1. A whole head of celery another like $1.29, bag of carrots like $2. throw a hard boiled egg in there (here we can get a whole dozen for $1). right there you are talking enough for for one person for several days.

You're up to $5, where's the other $10?

How are you cheaply feeding one person for several days for $5?

NM didn't realize we're arguing the same side

Throw crap in slow cooker, return in a few hours, you've got food.

which is why he needs to man up and push through the pain to walk to the library: lose weight and the physical activity helps get blood flowing to alleviate the back and knee pain. Just sitting around letting the muscles atrophy and the joints solidify only worsens the problem.
