Default Using mobile data for main internet source @ home

Moving houses, internet install guy came out yesterday and said there is no cable line running to the house and the install may not happen for 1-2 weeks.

Coincidentally we are looking at moving our mobile carrier from ProjectFi to Verizon. I saw Verizon has unlimited plans for mobile data. Is it truly unlimited? We probably use roughly 20GB data/week at home - mostly streaming netflix/youtube. Will this work via our phones/ mobile hotspot?

I'm pretty sure "unlimited" really means "at some point we will throttle speeds back to a 14.4baud modem speed if you use too much data"

And I bet that happens BEFORE 80GB per month.

Also, I think Verizon bottlenecks video resolution down depending on your plan. You may not get to see netflix in 1080p.

Hotspot data appears to be soft-capped at 15, 20, or 0GB per month at LTE speed depending on the plan. Then 600Kbps after that.

I played Spider-Man from a hotel using my Verizon phone as a hotspot. Used 6G in a few hours, so it's definitely fast enough. I thought my cap was 10G per month, but it must be 15 or 20 based on the above.

Also, note that the tethering cap is per paid device, not per account. In my case, me, my wife, 3 kids, so we get 5X whatever the cap is.

Verizon is starting to roll out 5G for home use in a few cities: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/5g-home-faqs/

Also -- I only use wifi at home, not at work or around town, and I use a lot of data. I've never been throttled, at least that I've noticed. My plan says they throttle me at 22GB per month, per device, but even then, only at peak times.

So, if you can spread it across a couple devices, you can probably get by with using that for two weeks.

That's good to know, thanks.

You're welcome. I worded it poorly, so to be clear, each device/line has its own limit. To get 5X the limit, you'd have to use each device up to its limit, then switch to another device. You can't aggregate all of the hotspot limit onto one device.

Also, it's expensive, but for $35 you can apparently add another 5G to the monthly tethering limit. Obviously better to use all devices to their limit first. You can do this at most 10x per month, per line, but it's not a recurring charge, just if you use it.

https://www.verizonwireless.com/supp...ta-boost-faqs/

Based on the chart Walter posted, I have the middle plan, so I get 15 per month. It definitely used to be 10, so I think they just increased it. Even then, it's not a hard cap, it just throttles you.

Sorry, one more thing. I was assuming you had a different device (eg Smart TV) for streaming, but if you are just streaming to your phone the hotspot limit doesn't matter.

You could also run it on your phone but plug in an HDMI dongle to get it to display on the tv, and bypass the tethering.

I got rid of my cable recently after switching my mobile service to Verizon. I use my iPad as a hotspot for everything, including video games but not work yet or ever since they don't pay me enough.
