I did one of these once. It felt very impersonal and I felt undervalued. Then I went to the in-person interview. It felt very impersonal and I felt like I would be treated as just another one of the many actuarial sheep the company had. Go figure.

I did a bunch of these this year looking for an EL job (still searching) and they were all awful - impersonal, awkward, and gave me no sense of their culture whatsoever. So I voted no. Last year, I had a similar situation looking for internships (ended up working for an energy trader floor instead). Allstate's hiring practice is to have candidates answer an automated voice interview over the phone - can you believe it? Ridiculous. Hard to stay positive and optimistic when this is the "first impression treatment" across many many companies

I recently did one, and the video was a required component. That just felt icky to me, because what you look like shouldn't be used in a hiring decision. I mean, I'm a white male, so it's not such a big deal for me, but if I were a black lesbian female, I would have been pissed.

But u can't see lesbian.

And there is still a high probability of racial discrimination - for example, if we're talking anti-asian, asian americans or internationals typically have a unique voice. Pretty easy to identify CONFIDENCE in general, voice helps and looks do too but then again you're asking candidates to talk in front of a screen with no one on the other end
