You can also ask what the average annual raise was the last couple of years. Although of course you hope to rise and get more than that.

That sounds like it is potentially a big salary hit. Too bad. Is there a recruiter in this deal? That's the sort of thing recruiters are sometimes good with. (although remember that they are paid by the employer, not by you, and that's where their loyalty is.)

The only recruiter involved is the internal recruiter employed by the company - which I'm guessing is essentially like an HR rep? Not sure exactly.

More like an HR rep. But one that actually knows what actuaries do and what they are (i.e., not necessarily in the same "hireable mold" as the other employees).

I thought the conventional advice is that you should refrain from talking about financial things until the offer stage. Is the bolded acceptable/no big deal to lots of hiring managers?

Another question. What if you are somewhat on the cusp of the position's experience requirement and want to know a realistic timeline to get promoted to the next position? Can you ask that?

Me, too. And was uncomfortable with the size of the offer.

That wasn't in the OP. It was post #14.

Now I'm curious just which parts of the thread you selectively read.

To clarify: I received an offer earlier this year and turned it down without negotiation. I reached out again to the internal recruiter with the intention of restarting the interview process.

I have no intentions of bringing up salary concerns before getting to the offer stage again, if that even happens.

Oh, then I'm the one who misunderstood post #14 and subsequent. I read it as the company was still interested in you and had made another offer, which you were weighing against your current comp. I didn't realize it was the earlier offer.
