Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI LGA 1150 intel Z96 HDMI SATA

I see zero chance of me going 4K anytime soon, 1440p is possible but still unlikely since I'd have to get a new monitor to make the best of it and I'm happy with my current monitor. Don't think I'd go VR anytime soon either.

Sounds like: new hard drive, ram, and new GPU (and maybe a new power supply, I'll have to check)

Can't speak to your budget, but if the numbers above are correct, it's worth the extra $50 for the 1080 over the 1070. Gives you a lot more flexibility, plus it's an all around beast.

$50 extra is totally doable. In fact, if it was worth it I'd be open to a completely new rig although it doesn't seem like it is. The only negative to going down the completely new rig route is that I don't have much use for the old one since I have a steamlink that I can use to do couch gaming when necessary.

If that's the case, maybe consider doing the new rig and selling your old one on craigslist for like, $400.

It probably won't even fetch $300.

Possibly true, depending on where he lives. I sold my old computer that had a 500gb hd, AMD Phenom II processor, GTX 460 and 8gb RAM for $300 back in March-ish. As long as you put 'can run fortnite well' then you're golden. Throw in a cheap mouse/keyboard/monitor ($30 for all) and makes it even easier.

Another alternative is to donate to an appropriate charity, if there is one in your area.

For playing games at 1080p on a single monitor, I'd suggest going the other direction to save $150+ by stepping DOWN from the GTX 1070 to the 1060.

Various videos on Youtube have shown that the 1060 can sustain frame rates of 70-100 fps at 1080p on modern games. Yes, the 1070 can do 20-30% more fps, but a casual gamer on a normal monitor isn't going to notice or need that extra fps, at least not to the extent of spending an extra $150.

IMO, the choice should be between the GTX 1060 with 3GB vs. 1060 with 6GB, not 1070 vs 1080.

Or keep it, throw a GTX 1060 in there with no other upgrades, and use it along with the new PC for local 2-player gaming.

Good ideas, IMHO
