Aw foo bar. The browser ate my intro to this link:
http://thedailywtf.com/Articles/Self-Modifying-VBA.aspx

Anyway, I get a kick when something from Excel shows up at the Daily WTF. It would be nice to have something like the Daily WTF for spreadsheets [as per this entry: http://blog.corality.com/2009/07/%E2...orld%E2%80%9D/ ] but due to proprietary info issues, I can see why you're not going to get a site like that. It's much easier to pull out generic messed-up code and post it on a blog than to post a spreadsheet. Alas.

Wow, I did not even know you could make a VBA macro read in code from a module. That's scary.

There is a thread here somewhen in Tech that talks about how to do that. Daily WTF should be required reading for IT and actuaries.

Not exactly on topic, but related to one of the things I'm big about with spreadsheets: User Interfaces

http://carsonified.com/blog/design/1...-fundamentals/

Pulling out the points:
Quote:
1. Know your user
2. Pay attention to patterns
3. Stay consistent
4. Use visual hierarchy
5. Provide feedback
6. Be forgiving
7. Empower your user
8. Speak their language
9. Keep it simple
10. Keep moving forward

Talk about internal controls on financial statements:
http://www.independent.ie/business/i...w-1820391.html

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/art...ally-fell.html

http://drinksdaily.com/2009/07/cc-gr...venue-results/

Quote:
C&C the group that owns Magners cider, had to admit this week that revenue figures that were publicly released less than a week ago were …er-hem…worse than it had originally revealed.

Shares in the Irish drinks group fell 15 per cent to €1.96 after it said total revenue in the four months to end-June had not risen 3 per cent as reported, but had dropped 5 per cent.
....
He said the error in last week’s announcement occurred after data were incorrectly transferred from an accounting system used for internal guidance to a spreadsheet used to produce the trading statement.
How's that for operational risk.

Looks like this error got caught in time, and it's not a spreadsheet issue, but the same thing could happen with spreadsheets:
http://thedailywtf.com/Articles/But-...e-a-Thing.aspx

Quote:
Mike went back the drawing board. It just didn’t make sense that his aggregator was skipping some data and changing other data. His code worked fine locally, but it always outputted the wrong info in production. Desperate and out of ideas, he asked Herb for a copy of the report so that he might be able to reproduce the problem locally.

He opened up the report definition and noticed a three-day old comment at the top.

2007-01-15: Added in 2007 basis rate adjustment calculations

“Herb,” Mike said frantically, “you told me you didn’t change the report. But it says you modified it earlier this week!”

“Um, yeah,” Herb replied as-a-matter-of-factly, “I had to add the new rate calcs. Those change every year, you know!”

Mike stared intently. The rate calcs would have most certainly explained the incorrect figures. “So, why did you tell me that you didn’t change the report?”

“Because I didn’t change a thing,” he said, “I just added a couple lines of code at the bottom.”

After Herb removed the newly added lines, the situation all-of-a-sudden resolved itself, and the accountants were able to go back to running the year-end financials.

Mike also learned a very different definition for the word “change” that day.
It's a good thing Herb put in a comment when he made a change.

Huge lack of version control there, though. Mike shouldn't have needed to go through all that work to find when and what the last change was.

Oh, I can imagine that would be a real hoot.

Thrill as an errant copy-paste screws up alignment of formulas!

Chill as numbers are entered as text!

I think I understand why some of these problems are ignored. They're pretty boring compared to outright fraud.

They are exciting (gut wrenching?) for those of us that can relate, though.
