Alabama student is PowerPoint National Champ

Spoiler:
The state of Alabama has another national champion, but this one plays on a digital field.

Would you believe that an 18-year-old from tiny Geraldine, Alabama, (population 900) was just crowned the Microsoft Office Specialist PowerPoint National Champion?

Meet Seth Maddox, a graduate of Geraldine High School and soon-to-be Auburn University freshman, who just bested 365,000 other competitors who entered the competition, and 146 who were invited to the finals in Orlando. He will head to New York City next month to compete in the World Championship.

If youve ever had to do a presentation for work or school on Microsoft PowerPoint, you know it takes a good deal of tinkering to tap into its many functions.

What makes Maddox championship more impressive is that he stumbled upon the test to qualify for the competition on the day before the deadline back in early December. He only had one try to qualify, when other competitors took the test many, many times.

It must have just been the Lord working it out, because I didnt even know it existed, Maddox said.

He was already a bit of a PowerPoint aficionado, having used it in school and to put song lyrics up on the screen for his church youth group at Baltimore Avenue Church of God in Albertville. Hes also got certifications in Microsoft Word, Excel, Excel Expert and Access.

Im a technology guy myself. I like computers, I like Microsoft Office. It was just a good fit for me, Maddox said.

When he learned he qualified for the national competition, he dug in and refined his skills.

I took a lot of practice exams, just kind of played around with it, prayed quite a bit, he said.

With encouragement from his teacher, Valerie Arnold, and his parents, Dan and Tara Maddox, grandparents and all the people supporting me and praying for me at home, Maddox felt like he did well on the the tests in Orlando June 17-19.

It turned out, he did better than any other competitor.

I definitely did some praying before, so when I went in I was pretty confident, he said. I was going to win, or I was going to lose, and I won, thank the Lord.

Maddox won a $3,000 scholarship, and now he is getting ready for the World Championships July 28-31 in New York, a trip that is sponsored by Certiport, a Pearson VUE business.

I think its definitely going to be difficult, he said. Im just planning on doing a lot more practice tests, just try to click every button in PowerPoint, try to figure out what every little thing does, and just show up, try my hardest and see if its good enough.

No matter what happens at the world competition, the national title will definitely give Maddox a leg up as he heads to Auburn to study computer engineering.

Along with computer engineering, Ill probably be doing some software work, and its going to be great to integrate that into my education and hopefully help me land a job once I get my degree, he said.

His dream job, once he graduates from Auburn, is to work for a big technology company like Intel or AMD, or maybe even Google or Facebook, since they now both operate data centers in north Alabama.

Id love to be able to stay in Alabama, he said.
