Default Cheapest way to get into this smartphone thing?

What I have: A super-ultra-basic just-makes/receives-phone-calls Tracfone. I make/receive an average of maybe 3 calls per month. My latest yearly subscription with Tracfone runs out next month.

What I'd like: To be able to check/send email, keep a calendar, do a little light web browsing. And make/receive my typical 3 or so calls per month. As cheaply as possible. (I pay ~$150/year now. I'm sure I can't upgrade to the smart stuff that cheaply, but I don't want to pay that a month, either.)

What I know about how to do this: Nothing.

Suggestions?

Hey, I've always been about 5 years behind on this whole mobile phone thing. But 5 years ago is now 2006. About time I sent a text or something.

I don't know what Tracfone means, but Sprint has some options to get the handset for free from Wirefly and the you get unlimited calls, text and data for 69.99. I am plannign to do this when my contract is up.

http://www.wirefly.com/plans/sprint/

also, who are you and what did you do with Pseudolous?

It's a prepaid phone, the kind you'd give to a kid so she can call for a ride home but not be able to run up a bill or that you'd give to granny so she can call you if she falls and breaks her hip.

That's a month, right? Seems more than I'd really want to pay. Is that for all 4 "G"? I don't think I need that many. How much for just 2, 2.5 "G"?

That's the best national plan available of which I am aware. If you really just want to text, and aren't worried about web and email, we could do better.

Or you could look into some local carriers. If you lived in Chicago, for example, you get a Boost phone that uber cheap.

edit: Boost is the wrong company, I don't remember who I was thinking of

And when I say uber cheap, I mean in relative terms to normal people. For you, it will still be fairly expensive.
