Default upgrade my Roku

I've had a first generation Roku for ages. It's been great. I watch Netflix, sometimes Amazon prime. It's simple, it works. It's the source of almost everything i watch on TV.

But Amazon plans to stop supporting it. I suppose i could connect the nearby desktop computer. But hey, maybe it's time to upgrade my Roku.

My needs aren't major. My TV is small by modern standards, I don't have any external speakers or anything to consider. Probably anything will work. But I figured I may as well ask for advice. Maybe there's something I haven't even thought of that I'd really like.

We have Roku, FireTV, and Chromecast.

The Chromecast needs a phone or other device to stream from (and dies very easily during lightning storms), and I'm not 100% sure they even make them anymore.

The Rokus are dependable, get one of the boxes rather than the sticks if you want faster download speeds. Allegedly they all work at the same speed but there is a big difference imo. Startup and app-opening times are better with the boxes too.

FireTV is similar to Roku but stuff that you can watch on Prime is visible on the home screen instead of having to open the app first. If you watch more Prime than Netflix a FireTV stick would be a no-brainer.

Have never owned/tried an AppleTV, but I've heard mixed reviews. With all of Apple's restrictions on everything else I wouldn't recommend, but if you're an Apple fan it might be worth it to you.

Chromecast is definitely still being made, as the Google Stadia founder's pack includes a Chromecast to enable Stadia games to be streamed to a tv.

I have chromecast, roku premiere (?) and FireTV cube (first generation) on my main TV.

Other than using the FireTV to turn my TV on and off, I almost exclusively use the Roku for watching TV, even stuff on Amazon Prime.

Iíve been on the Roku train for a long time, so I canít comment too much on the others. Agree with DD regarding the USB stick things, we bought one and found the performance isnít as good as the Ďboxí Rokus.

One of ours has a headphone jack on the remote, which can be handy. I forget what model it is and Iím not home to check.

I don't think they sell "boxes" any more.
