Rooting is akin to having administrator access on your phone whereas you are normally a guest user. This gives you the ability to do things not normally allowed by the manuf. Even simple stuff like deleting a Need For Speed game demo that comes on your phone (and other so called bloatware) needs root.

Skinned just means a different theme than the stock Android theme which is really pretty basic. Common ones are MotoBLUR and HTC Sense UI are common ones. They make it look very nice, but the drawback is that it has to be updated to work with new versions of Android which can take a couple of months. That is a big BOO from me.

If you are "rooted" as scott talks about, you can install the new versions of Android without the skins sooner than if you wait for the manufacturer to update the phone.

Not surprirsing, as it's no longer illegal to root your smartphone.

Perhaps the most thorough review of the Droid X you'll find:

It will still void your warranty if you root it. Of course, like I said, there is unroot as well, so no big deal. Unfortunately, if you have something break that prevents you from unrooting, that would be no fun. Of course I have yet to hear of someone getting denied service because of rooting.

That was my first impression of it. I skipped the "set as default" check box once and couldn't check it fast enough the second time. So good.
