Teen girls rob Acworth bank

By SAEED AHMED
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 02/28/07

These weren't your typical bank robbers.

Two girls, who police say might be as young as 16, walked up to a teller at a Bank of America branch inside a grocery store Tuesday afternoon, handed a note demanding cash, smiled as they waited, and made off with the loot.

"This is something totally new to us," said Cobb police Officer Wayne Delk.

The girls approached the teller inside the Kroger store at 1720 Mars Hill Road in Acworth about 12:15 p.m. The store is in a strip mall in an upscale west Cobb residential neighbood.

What surprised police is that one of the girls appears to be laughing in a bank surveillance camera image -- as though "it's all fun and games to them," Delk said.

Clad in casual wear, the girls used as their only disguise a pair of trendy sunglasses. And police hope that will be their undoing.

"The pictures are too good," Delk said. "Someone's got to know them."

Teenage girls demanding money from bank tellers are rare, but not unheard of.

One such robbery occurred in February 2006 in Lima, Ohio, where, according to published reports, a 15-year-old high school freshman was caught after she left behind her bookbag in the getaway car.

Cobb police do not know how their teenage bandits got away Tuesday.

They barely looked old enough to drive.

No threat of force or anything? The bank teller was in on it.

Doesn't sound like there were weapons. Why'd the teller give them cash?

Aren't they trained to just give the cash and not put up a fight, weapon or not?

I think it is standard procedure to just hand over the cash. Tellers are also instructed to trigger an alarm in their tray.

From the Banks POV it is more important to secure your employees well being than losing a few hundred $$. Especially when the police will more than likely track down the suspects.

So what is that, a week-long training course, and at the end you get a certificate or something?

I heard on the radio the other day about a bank robber who was caught, trying to spend his stolen cash for a car. The money was still wet from the dye pack that banks use when handing over cash in a situation like this.

I wonder if either one of the girls is blonde? Maybe they will spend wet cash, too.
