Actuaries do a great job of analyzing data and models, but often fall short in effectively communicating results. This can be especially true in the area of data visualization. This session will explore how to create the most effective visualizations for different types of data regularly used by actuaries, providing examples in Excel, the spreadsheet regularly used by actuaries. Join us to build your skills with the tool you already use!

Learning Objectives:

Establish and expand upon principles of data visualization with emphasis on how to improve graphs to relay information visually

Review the most effective ways to illustrate various types of data including:
1. Time series
2. Categorical and grouped data
3. Multidimensional data sets
4. Large data sets
5. Data with geographic components
Recognize ways to visualize data within the spreadsheet itself not just by using the graphing functions and charts including:
1. Conditional formatting
2. Sparklines
3. Tile grid maps
Who Should Attend This Webinar?

Any actuary or financial professional interested in improving data communication through visualization using Excel.

Presenter: Mary Pat Campbell, FSA, MAAA, PRM

Mary Pat is Vice President, Insurance Research at Conning in Hartford, Connecticut. In the past, she also taught courses on computing (Excel, Access, and VBA) and business writing for actuarial science students at the University of Connecticut.
