Quote:
World Community Grid's mission is to create the largest public computing grid benefiting humanity. Our work is built on the belief that technological innovation combined with visionary scientific research and large-scale volunteerism can change our world for the better. Our success depends on individuals - like you - collectively contributing their unused computer time to this not-for-profit endeavor.

Simply donate the time your computer is turned on, but would normally lie idle, for projects that benefit humanity. Like a screensaver, grid technology is easy to use, safe and free. When you are ready to use your computer, the grid connection will shut itself off until the next time your computer is idle.
Here's a personal recruitment link they gave me: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/re...ruiterId=75031.

Otherwise, you will first need to download the agent and register with the World Community Grid by going to http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org and clicking on Become a member. Then, click on download now. Once you have completed the download and registration process click the "join this team" button found here to join the actuarial outpost team.

It's simply a chance to use your otherwise idle computer for the greater good of humanity.

I thought I was helping to cure cancer by posting in the Reef.

(And I'm going to go sign up now, because I feel obligated to after making a smart-aleck comment in this sort of thread.)

NASA's JPL used to have problems with the SETI grid jamming their internet connections and slowing computers. This looks like a good cause, but you might want to monitor the bandwidth usage, especially if you are using it at work where it could get you in trouble.

Ah, don't worry about it. I was going to say something like that regarding posting in political. And I'm not signing up for it. In fact, I don't even know what it is as I didn't read the first post. Too long.

Good point. I only use it at home. I think that our firewall blocks it here at work anyway.
