Default Google I/O 2019 Streaming Live

In case anyone is interested in tuning into the livestream, you can find it here:
https://events.google.com/io/

Probably some information about Android Q and Pixel 3A.

I like the idea of a $400 phone that's all around pretty solid, but not great, and has a great camera. I'll be curious to see where the OnePlus 7 comes in for price next week.

My phone has been dying, but I still feel like the Pixel 4 will have support for 5g and possibly some other big ticket items. I think I'm going to try to wait until then, but maybe start checking out the google nest stuff, actually start using google assistant, etc. Will be a good learning period until our home is done building and we can really start syncing everything up.

Very tempted by this new Pixel. Current phone is about 2.5 years old (OnePlus 3T) but not really giving me any reason to replace it. Heard great things about these Pixel cameras. And now both the Google store and Best Buy are offering a hunnerd dollar gift card with purchase, knocking the effective price (assuming you were going to spend that hunnerd bucks anyway) down to $300.

The most exciting things for me were:

1) The "stop" commands. We use a Home Mini in our kitchen and the kids bathroom for timers and stopping the timer alert by saying "Hey Google, cancel alarm" two or three times because it can't hear you is super annoying. It was hilarious that the new "stop" command was the first thing he presented and it got the biggest applause. I was clapping at my desk.

EDIT: Also, holding up your hand to mute the Next Hub Max is pretty cool.

2) The universal closed captioning. It'll caption anything, on-device, instantaneously. Pretty amazing and super handy. I've been watching YouTube videos on the app home screen with captions for a few months now with no need to click through and hear the audio. It'll be great to have it automatically for any video regardless of the source.

3) Dark mode! Finally!

Ordered one for the kid. Her Moto G is two years old and is in the expected condition of one that's been used by a middle schooler for 2 years. So I'll get to play with it, see what I think about the screen size, etc. For an effective $300 (after the Best Buy gift card), really doesn't seem like there's anything competitive.

Our stop command wasn't working on whatever day IO was. Still had to do the "Hey Google, cancel alarm" two or three times. I haven't tried again since then though.
