FIFA is so dumb and corrupt. They could've taken the WC away from Qatar a long time ago.

A bold strategy by FIFA. Make the Russia bid look good.

I guess they decide tomorrow whether to screw up 2022 or not. Need more stadiums somewhere, and it might increase the time frame, which, if you remember, is still scheduled for December, during most top National Teams' players' club seasons.

Also, Club World Cup expanding to 24 teams, moving to June, during an odd-numbered year.
Makes the non-standard-season leagues a bit troublesome. They'll have one or more teams out for a few weeks.

Guessing he gets the latter (Club World Cup stuff), but not the former (2022 expansion).

Voted to screw up 2022 if they can find another nation to host a few games.

Quote:
The FIFA Council has approved working with Qatar to explore expanding the 2022 World Cup to 48 teams by adding at least one more country in the Persian Gulf to host matches.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino wants to enlarge the tournament from 32 to 48 teams, which a feasibility study has shown requires at least one additional country being used out of five identified.

FIFA will now produce a proposal with Qatar to take to the next council and congress meetings in June in Paris.

The World Cup is already growing to 48 teams from 2026, when the tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

A FIFA feasibility study says Qatar would not be forced to share games with Bahrain, Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates unless those countries restore diplomatic and travel ties with Doha.

Because of their neutrality in the situation, Kuwait and Oman are indicated to be the current possible options to host games in 2022, but their stadium infrastructure is only briefly assessed in a FIFA report.

Few more million dollars should "make it feasible" to anyone with concerns.
Just like the current situation in Qatar.

Club World Cup might be a little more interesting to figure out.

I mean, UEFA already ranks Euro clubs for seeding and such. How much more math would it take to expand to all countries and clubs in the world? Might have to take July/August Friendlies into account. "Now it counts!"
I think the big concern is that Europe will get 10 spots, but probably will deserve 16 spots. 10/6/3/3/1/1 (Euro/CONMEBOL/CONCACAF/CAF/ASIA/PACIFIC).

And I want to remind FIFA that we have 40-50 large, Soccer-playable stadiums sitting idle all summer long.

FIFA says Qatar WC will remain at 32 teams and not expand to 48.

It's about time. No way that was going to be logistically possible. Slaves couldn't build another stadium that quickly, even with alien help (/tfh).

OK, so USA still have to be in the top three of The Hex to qualify, or 4th to play a play-in head-head knockout, I presume?
The details of the qualification remain to be determined.
Were they going to use the CONCACAF Nations League (or, basically 2021-22 season) over the next few years to determine the Hex?

Based on this story WDR in Germany, it seems the Qatar human rights abuses are still going on. WDR went undercover to film a work camp and talk with workers who have not been paid in months. Their employers hold their passports and work permits so they are prisoners.

Only English version I can find is on twitter: https://twitter.com/bpbest/status/1136561850139779072

I wonder how much an issue of players choosing not to participate will be with the tournament mid-season. Doesn't seem realistic to have many of the top players just go MIA for a month+.
