GAAP and Statutory reserves come into play when the premiums are guaranteed for several years. That means, typically, "death insurance" more usually known as life insurance. Annuities are a whole different kettle of fish.

There are med supp plans out there that are "single price", meaning once you sign on the price does not change throughout the time the person maintains their coverage.

I think for those plans you also need reserves outside IBNR.

Correct. Issue age policies would need a contract reserve.
