If the ground is really hard you may think about renting a rototiller to break it up to the depth you want first. You'll still have to haul out the tilled soil but it won't be as hard. 200 sq. ft. is a pretty big area. Follow all the how to books pretty close as you'll want a good solid even base. I've dirt-balled a brick path around the side of one of my houses a few years back. Pulled the sod, tamped down the earth and filled the low spots with sand. It works for a non-show space and I've only had to fix one spot that sunk/shifted. I would never do this for a patio space I was planning on using as an outdoor living space. |

That's 100 cubic feet of dirt ... that's quite a bit more than I was expecting. That's like 4-5 tons of dirt to dig up.
