This. In large corporate settings, the days of the straight up handshake job offer are largely a thing of the past. It still happens here and there, but it's not like it was 50 years ago (from what I've gathered from admittedly thin data on what life was like when dinosaurs roamed the earth).

I think you should also talk to your non-actuarial personal or professional connections about recruiters they've worked with in the past and would recommend. I've had success with finding non-actuarial recruiters this way (not so much through cold searching, actuarial recruiting is a lot easier to find.)

not to pile on, but I suspect what you're uncomfortable about may also be that it doesn't feel fair to get opportunities through personal connections not available to others. in which case I'd refer you to this classic AO post from well before my time (about exams, but applicable here)

I've never understood this thought process. Do you think it is cheating to use a recruiter because you "didn't find the job yourself"?
