I wonder if there's is better than other cable companies because everything I've heard about VOIP is that it's really shitty

She doesn't have to. With that much upload capacity, you could stream nearly your whole telepresence to her constantly. The future is here.

I think that what Google is really trying to do here is force the idea of "dumb pipes." Basically, they don't want to do anything more than provide the data connection, unlike all the telcos and cablecos trying to hock their wares.

The telecos and cablecos are making money by you signing up for their triple play garbage, even though a nice fast internet connection could facilitate VOIP and IPTV.

This could be VERY disruptive if content providers can get over themselves and decide to market their content independent of satellite and cable contracts.

The downside is that they are probably all panicking right now thinking that all this is going to be used for is piracy when they have been given the tool to eradicate piracy by allowing Google Fiber subscribers to stream super high quality at a reasonable price. We'll see if they figure it out. My guess: They won't. They will just sue or put up more red tape to slow Google down.

And now AT&T will be competing with Google to offer similar speeds in the same area
