Now it's coming to Austin TX (not where I am).

I signed up for notification. I currently have Verizon FiOS fiber: 50MB/50MB + HD TVs for about $210 per month -- a lot slower than Google Fiber of 1,000MB/1,000MB and a lot more expensive than their Plan 3 of $120 per month.

I've looked what's inside the Fiber lines when the technicians were here -- stuff inside looks like clear plastics.

And Provo, Utah becomes the 3rd city to get google fibre.

Slightly different though. Provo built their own city wide fiber network but it has never been financially viable. So they are going to sell the whole kit and kaboodle to Google for the gigantic price of $1. Residents of Provo will continue to pay $3.3 million per year on the initial $39 Million bond that built the system. Google will hook up the remaining 2/3rd of the city that had it to the curb but have not hooked up.

Says residents will get free 5Mbps service for at least 7 years while gigabit service will be priced similar to other places Google is in.

Sweet deal for Google. All they have to do is pay for hooking up 2/3rds of the city and a few upgrades and they get a fiber network to a whole city (granted only about 37K residences IIRC). The taxpayers have been paying and will finish paying for the network that Google now owns.
