Default Google Home

Has anyone else here ordered one? Mine should be arriving Monday. My hopes aren't too high but I'm looking forward to playing around with it. If nothing else I hope the sound quality is decent so that I can at least get use out of it as a Cast target.

Here's an early review:

And a word about some limitations/confusions in how the Goog's implementing its Assistant:

Ordered one. I may want more, but want to test drive before I commit.

This is a nice tidbit, and answers something I'd been wondering:

And as a really cute trick, Google's smart enough to only answer on Google Home if you happen to have a phone nearby that also was triggered by the "OK, Google" hotword. Nice.
(Phrased ambiguously, but I take it to mean that only the Home unit will answer, and will communicate with nearby phones to tell them "you dudes chill, I got this".)

If it could turn off my Piper when I come home, that would be nice. A few years ago when I looked into home automation it was both not great and expensive. It's much better, but probably still a few years before I go nuts and just make apps run everything.

I listen to an Internet-o-Things podcast sometimes (this one) and it still seems that the hassle-to-awesomeness ratio is generally way too high for me to want to jump in.

Other than the pending Home, the only other "connected" device I have (aside from phones, tablets, computers, and TV boxen) is a doohickey that lets me open my garage door from my phone. That's pretty handy.

dumb question from apple sheeple. Is the google assistant on all androids or just Pixel line? Any expectations that it gets shipped to apple or is it basically just google now?

I hate Siri but don't want to leave the apple ecosystem so I just use the google app with voice search for most of my in car direction/information look up. I'm consistently amazed by how well it understands my mumbled speak and has the context to produce the right answer. I think if its anything that gets me to switch back to droid (had original blackberry droid) it will be the ever increasing gap between Google's AI and Siri. I have an Echo and was considering getting some Dots but the new google home has me seconding guessing the Echo buy in.

Siri seems to work about 1/2 the time tops, while google seems to work around 90%+.

Short answer: It's complicated.

Longer answer: There are (at least?) three similarish-but-differentish things Google calls "Assistant":

1) Voice assistant built deeply into (only) the Pixel OS.

2) Chatbot built into their newest messaging app, Allo. (Installable on Android or iOS.)

3) Voice assistant that lives in a little air-freshener hardware device called " Google Home". Hmm. Dunno if this is Android only. Maybe initially?

All can do slightly different things.

For an even longer answer see one of the links I posted above.
