For those of you who live in NYC or plan to visit, I highly recommend the 911 museum.

Just don't expect a fun time.

My office was a block from the towers. I was in the subway when the planes hit and remember the site of the buildings on fire when I walked out of the subway at City Hall. During my 7-mile walk home I remember thinking what the date was, since I knew that was going to be one of those things that everyone would discuss. Other memories from that time:

- Hearing movie references to Independence Day and The Siege
- One of those Christian fanatics telling us that the world was ending so we should repent
- Seeing my wife in tears because she was worried I was dead. I had considered the thought of co-workers being killed, but fortunately no one from my office was physically harmed.
- Being glad that I had a cable modem instead of dial-up so that I could e-mail my family (most phones weren't working)
- Having to commute to NJ for the next 4 months; we could have returned to the office sooner but the underwriters didn't want to be "disrupted" during renewal season. At first it was in the burbs, but we eventually found space in nearby Jersey City near ISO (which, ironically, had recently moved their headquarters from 7 World Trade Center)
- The first day we worked in Jersey City, another plane had crashed in NYC
- Creepy coincidence: I had an Onion page-a-day calendar on my desk, open to the headline "TWA 800 Passengers Missed the End of Dragonheart." (This was in reference to a plane that had blown up and crashed in NY a few years before.)

Those memories are pretty tame compared to stuff that other co-workers saw and heard. About 10 years later I worked in a company where one of my co-workers had worked at Aon in 2 World Trade Center, and made the right decision to go down the stairs after the first plane hit. She escaped with about 15 minutes to spare.

I was also in Manhattan on 9/12/2001 because I lived there. It was a depressing ghost town. The entire borough basically closed down.

IIRC where I was living it felt like a Sunday. Offices were closed, most people weren't set up to work remotely, but restaurants were open, so those that weren't glued to their TVs enjoyed a nice day outside.

They could be Russian, they could be Chinese, or they could be 400-pound guys from Jersey
